Dev Diwali In Varanasi
Witness the Magical Sunrise on the Ganga
THE EXPERIENCE
Where the Sky Meets
the River in Fire
Dev Diwali — “the Diwali of the Gods” — falls on Kartik Purnima, fifteen days after the regular Diwali, and is celebrated nowhere on earth quite like it is in Varanasi. Legend holds that on this night, the gods themselves descend to bathe in the Ganga and celebrate Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura. The city responds by lighting every single ghat — all 84 of them — with diyas, candles, and lamps, until the riverfront becomes an unbroken wall of golden light.
From the ghats, you see one stretch of this spectacle. From a boat on the Ganga, you see all of it — the full curve of the riverfront ablaze, reflected and doubled in the water, with fireworks lighting the sky above and the Ganga Aarti performed on a grand scale at Dashashwamedh Ghat.
“There is Diwali, and then there is Dev Diwali in Kashi. Once you have seen the Ganga become a river of fire, no other festival compares.”
Ganga Ram Sahani’s family has watched this night unfold from the water for sixty years. We know exactly where to position our boats — far enough to take in the full sweep of light, close enough to feel the music, the chanting, and the sheer scale of devotion that fills the river that night.

How It Works
Early Evening
Boarding Before the Crowds · We recommend boarding 30–45 minutes before sunset, as the river fills quickly once the lighting begins.
Sunset
The Lighting Begins · As dusk falls, ghat after ghat is lit in sequence — a wave of golden light spreading along the entire riverfront.
Peak Hour
Full Illumination · By around 6:30–7:00 PM, all 84 ghats are ablaze. Fireworks begin over the river, and the grand Dev Diwali Aarti is performed at Dashashwamedh Ghat. The Spectacle · Your boat holds position at the best vantage point, giving you an unobstructed, panoramic view of the lit ghats, the fireworks, and the reflections on the water.
Late Evening
Gentle Return · As the night winds down, your boat returns slowly, giving you a final, quieter look at the ghats still glowing in the dark.

FAQs
Dev Diwali falls on Kartik Purnima, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik — typically in November. We’ll confirm the exact date closer to the time, but boats for this evening sell out well in advance regardless of the precise date.
At least 6–8 weeks in advance. Dev Diwali is the single most in-demand night of the year on the Ganga, and our boats — especially the Bajra — are often fully booked two months prior.
hundreds of boats are on the water for Dev Diwali. This is part of the magic, but it does mean boarding early and choosing an experienced boatman matters. We prioritize safety and positioning to make sure you get the best view despite the crowds.
our private motor boats are ideal for couples, families, or small groups of friends who want the full Dev Diwali experience without needing the larger Bajra.
Absolutely. Our crew is specifically experienced in navigating Dev Diwali’s crowded waters, and every passenger is provided a life jacket regardless of group size.
